Busy Morning Between The Lines

The Thin Line Film Fest Between The Lines Industry Conference is starting to really come together.   I spent the morning chatting with Mark Menza, J. Schuh, and confirming Tim and Norma

Between The Lines is going to offer a ridiculous amount of information to both current and future production professionals.  We have attended other industry conferences and have been distinctly disappointed by the fact that most of them are simply a Manufacture’s sales pitch.  I don’t want Manufacturer “A”  to tell me how great their “camera” is…..I want a DP and a Camera Assisst to tell me the “gotcha’s” and “what-nots” related to the equipment as they relate to work done in the proverbial trenches. With a brief gap between cloud cover, going into overtime, Agency in a huff, and everyone looking at “you” what do you need to know to be a hero?

This is the guiding philosophy behind Between The Lines presented by DPA.  We are presenting real working pro’s offering you real advice that they have from years of practical application.  We are not interested in the academic principles per se, but rather, information that has a direct and real effect on-set.

As an audio guy I am sometimes asked, and have asked, “What mic should i buy?”  Well, it’s easy to read propaganda and find what is potentially pitched as the best mic in the world, but what does the guy/gal that holds mics everyday for 10 years have to say about mics?  What does the sales pitch not tell you….like maybe the solder is cheap and causes issues in 2 months, or maybe the beautiful sounding Schoeps mic you bought goes futzy in high humidity.  The gear we use is specialized, expensive, and very often not readily available to “field test”.  The “tricks of the trade” are hard to come by and we will be presenting them Sept. 26th – 27th in Denton Texas!!
